有感地震 An earthquake large enough to feel
Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008written by Electra
So I happened to be awake at 12:30-ish tonight to suddenly notice our 団地 building wobbling. It felt kinda wiggly, as if it were being shaken by the wind. The wind has been strong lately…
But our giant projects building (← see photo to left) doesn’t wobble in the wind.
Sure enough, when [...]
Golden Week 誕生日
Monday, May 5th, 2008May 5 is my birthday. That’s 誕生日 in Japanese. So yesterday I celebrated it, mostly with Roy but then with friends in the evening. Luckily, it is on a big holiday here in Japan — 子供の日 — which is in the midst of a large cluster of consecutive holidays. Those are Japanese [...]
プリクラ
Sunday, April 13th, 2008Electra has (unfortunately?) become quite enamored with プリクラ. Luckily, Roy and her other friends go along with it.
Above is Electra and her friend Haruka. Haruka is adorably sweet! This プリクラ was taken after we sang at a カラオケ館 called “Karaoke Mash!”, where I sang lots of Queen, The Beatles, and some Disney. [...]
*jaw drops*
Friday, March 21st, 2008THE YEN IS STRONGER THAN THE DOLLAR!!!!! Or should I say, the penny. Basically, 1¥ can buy more than 1¢. For a very long time, 1¥ could only buy about 0.9th of 1¢, and conversely 1¢ could buy 1.18¥.
Whooooaa. The dollar has really plummeted, yo.
日本の卒業式はすごーい!
Thursday, March 13th, 2008日本の卒業式はすごいだものよ! Japanese graduation ceremonies are freakin’ amazing!
Today I got to watch the graduation ceremony for the middle school I work at. (What’s funny is that the school term isn’t over yet. The 2nd years and 1st years still have 1.5 more weeks!) Its pretty amazing, and if I hadn’t been terribly shy (つまり/in [...]
まま働いています。
Saturday, February 16th, 2008(PreS. You can hover over the Japanese characters for a romanji-ization.)
So, much to the disappointment I’m sure of our friends back in the ‘States who desparately miss us and want us to come back, we have decided to recontract for another year. Or rather, a long discussion with our bank accounts and various other [...]
雪祭り!!! Sapporo is famous for the Snow Festival.
Sunday, February 10th, 2008Okay, this past weekend was what is called “yuki matsuri”/雪祭り/The Snow Festival. Its a really big Sapporo event, organized by the 自衛隊. Every night after a big snow-fall, the JiEiTai comes in the dead of night with their snow-plow bulldozers and dump trucks and steals all the snow on the street! Then they [...]
奇麗な女ですね!
Saturday, January 26th, 2008Remember Electra’s post about buying a kimono? Well here it is!
This picture was taken at Sagara-sensei’s house on 正月 (Shougatsu — New Year’s.) Specifically, this was what we call New Year’s Eve (Shougatsu seems to be 3 days so far as I can tell.) That night, we went to the shrine near Horohirabashi and did [...]
Electra Buys A Kimono (set)
Thursday, December 20th, 2007This is Takeuchi Kimono and Obi. Its a store I recently discovered. I walked past their uritsukushi display (seen here to the left) and was blown away by kimono and obi and obi linings and tabi and obi-tying rope and etc. etc. etc. But I was too timid about being unknowledgeable to go [...]
I got to wear kimono!
Saturday, December 1st, 2007So, back on November 10th, I got dressed in kimono by our friend Sagara-sensei. It was really awesome! There are way more parts involved than I thought. It makes me want to get a real one, but it also is a daunting thought because there are 3 layers of clothing, 4 layers of waist-wrapping, [...]
